Stir Up Sunday 2019

In Collective Worship today we talked about ‘Stir Up Sunday’ and the tradition of making Christmas Puddings on the last Sunday before the start of Advent. Lots of children were able to help out as we made our very own Christmas Pudding and every child in school took a turn to stir it. It is now ‘resting’ and will be steamed by Mrs Harrington Smith so that all the children can have a taste next week if they would like to. This is the same recipe we have followed for several years now and it is always very popular! .(It is vegetarian and nut-free.)  There are some photos in the gallery.

3 oz plain flour

3oz vegetable suet

4oz dark brown sugar;

½ tsp baking powder with ½ tsp mixed spice

4oz raisins

4oz sultanas

6oz currants

2oz mixed peel

2 medium eggs

Juice from a fresh lemon, orange and lime

Did you know these Christmas Pudding traditions?

Stir-up Sunday is the Sunday before Advent, the term comes from the opening words of the collect for the day in the Book of Common Prayer of 1549:

Stir up, we beseech thee, O Lord, the wills of thy faithful people; that they, plenteously bringing forth

the fruit of good works, may of thee be plenteously rewarded; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

It is traditional for all the family to participate in stirring the pudding on Stir-up Sunday, whilst making a wish at the same time.

The pudding should only be stirred clockwise, from east to west, in honour of the Wise Men making the journey to see baby Jesus.

The Christmas Pudding is said to have 13 ingredients to represent Jesus and his 12 disciples

The old tradition of putting coins in the pudding is said to bring wealth, health, happiness to anyone who finds one on Christmas Day.

Remembrance 2019

Our Young Worship group led a beautiful service for Remembrance this morning.  They told the rest of the school all about the history of remembrance, recited famous remembrance poetry and wrote very moving reflections and prayers.  One of the things we thought about was how today marks 100 years since the first 2 minute silence and the whole school fell silent at 11am.  Well done Young Worship.

Wow! Just look at this!

When St Ipps gets behind something - you do it in style!  Just look at your incredible generosity!

'A Little Something' is a local, non-profit organisation supporting disadvantaged families in Hitchin, Letchworth, Baldock and the surrounding villages.  Through donations, A Litte Something is able to help families get set up for their new arrival.

Ben decided that he wanted to help, and set about organising a non-uniform day.  The whole school community got behind him and brought in the most amazing pile of contributions today.  We are utterly overwhelmed by your support, thank you SO much!

Well done to the Y3/4 Cricket Team!

Yesterday, the Y3/4 Cricket team travelled to Ware to compete in the county cricket finals, representing our district. They played absolutely brilliantly – they won all of their heat matches, were the highest scoring team of the whole tournament but narrowly missed out on the county title in the final match. This places them as the 2nd best team across the whole of Hertfordshire – absolutely fantastic! We are so proud of the team; they have been training hard with Mr Smith and have shown fabulous team spirit and sportsmanship throughout. Well done!
