Autumn Week 6

Another week has flown by in Class 5! We've been very busy designing our wands and writing our advert in English, working on our short division skills in maths and exploring the different layers of soil in science!

I have seen a real improvement in the children's presentation this week and they are becoming far more confident in using their learning powers to show their understanding! It makes marking their work far more interesting and exciting to read!

I'm aware that some children have been a bit careless with their belongings at school and our cloakroom is full of jumpers, coats, bits of PE kits and trainers. Hopefully next week we can keep on top of tidying it and everyone can take home their items.

Looking forward to seeing some of your on Thursday afternoon for Class 5's family week session - there will be lots of maths actitivites to do including Turbo Tables!

Have a good weekend,

Miss Walker :)

Class 5 Week 5

Biscuits, biscuits and biscuits!

Thursday and Friday some of the children have been able to finally make their biscuits they have designed in DT. They have worked hard to keep to their specification however, the odd marshmallow or popping candy toppings seem to have snuck into their last minute design changes! We will continue our biscuit making on Monday for those who didn’t get the chance to this week!

In maths, we have been looking and the short and long multiplication method and have been working hard to ensure we know each step of the method. Some children admitted to struggling a bit as they did not know their times tables! Please try to practice these regularly, as it is a great help when learning trickier things!

We have finished our Harry Potter Hogwarts accepted letters this week – I am sure some of you saw the finished ones up on the wall on Monday. They have been well written and the children have focused on the format of a formal letter. Next week, we will be looking at advertisements for Wands and completing some descriptive writing!

Finally, an apology to the Year 5 parents – In the mad rush of a Friday afternoon I completely forgot to give out the children’s Residential School Journey letter. These will be given out on Monday.

Hope you all have a lovely weekend and with the absence of weekly homework, maybe some grid homework can be done, or extra times table practice!

See you Monday,

Miss Walker

Autumn Week 2

A second fab week in Class 5 has whizzed by! All the children are really starting to understand the rules and routines of their new class and are becoming more responsible for their behaviour and learning attitude!

Another week of Place Value activities in Maths finishing today with a variety of maths challenges to choose from. All the children had great fun figuring out new ways to be successful at the task and persevered to achieve their learning objective.

We have started reading Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone as our text in English and will be using this fiction text as a source for our writing over the next term. I am very excited and so are the children who know a bit about Harry Potter!

Just a reminder that your weekly homework is due in on Monday and you will also have your spelling test.

Have a great weekend,

Miss Walker J

Autumn Week 1

What a fantastic start to the term we have had. All the children have come back after the summer well rested and ready to start their new school year! The effort I have seen this week has been amazing and I am hoping that it will continue!

In maths this week we explored larger numbers – working with 5,6 and 7 digit numbers! We have played some number games and it got rather noisy with all the dice rolling around! On Friday, I set some tricky work to test their mathematical thinking – I was so pleased to see the perseverance and determination in everyone and cannot wait to continue next week!

J.k. Rowling has been our focus in English, using the Ipads and Non-fiction books to carry out independent research. All the children chose how to display their research and some very interesting facts were found!

Thank you to all those who have been so efficient in bringing back the DT letters! This has really helped me get an idea of what we will be tasting and baking soon!

Hope you’ve all had a lovely weekend,

See you Monday!

Miss Walker J

Summer Week 5

Class 5 have been working extremely hard this week, particularly in English. Not only have we written our own versions of the opening of Macbeth, but written a letter from Macbeth telling Lady Macbeth of the prophesies bestowed upon him and a diary entry as Lady Macbeth, plotting to ensure the prophesies come true! The children have been using fantastic language and really getting into the Shakespearean way of thinking and talking.

Just a reminder that four pieces of grid homework are due by next Friday - completed to a good standard please.

Have a lovely weekend,

Miss Walker J
